Girls Brigade Review

It’s been a while since I’ve last written to you. So much has happened in the past few months. We’ve had so much going on, it’s hard to recount it all.

A while ago, we made an appeal for people to bring in some knitting needles so we could send them off. They were sent of a short time ago, but I haven’t had any other news apart from that.

Recently, we have been thinking about Malawi . We have some contact with a Girls Brigade in Malawi and sent off some letters. Currently we have no reply. It is a group that doesn’t get much recognition and they seem delighted to be in contact with us. We hope to keep up good communications with them. The group is much larger than us and they have children who are younger than us and older than us. They have a few leaders who are volunteers and they meet more times than us. They also do a range of activities that are very different to ours.

The Brigaders have been continuing to go into the Explorers to help them. We have had some new faces join and they seem to be settling in well. Recently, the Explorers have been making some salt dough art. One week, they designed them (and there were lots of different and creative designs) and the next week they painted them. Whilst making them, a lot of flour was spilt on the flour, toilets, kitchen, them, me, everywhere. I dare say that it took a while to clean up afterwards. They had fun with the paint as well, getting it everywhere, but not as big a mess as with the flour.

The Juniors have been learning about first aid. They have been bandaging each other up and learning how to treat injuries. They recently had someone in to assess how they were doing. I’m sure they did well.

The Brigaders and Seniors have done some work, but not as much as all the other groups. We seem to have a knack for getting out of work and just gossiping. We have sorted out one thing we are doing, but I’m not sire what it’s for. We have recently heard of the good news of one of our leaders, Suzanne. She has had her baby, a little girl, and we eagerly await her return.

Last week, we had a meeting where we were all together. We all joined up (after the Juniors had their person in) and got to know about Malawi . We played games similar to those played in Malawi . Instead of using a hockey stick and ball, we used a stick and a beanbag. We also had a race with beanbags on our heads balanced on a flat disc. This was representative of carrying water on their heads.

We hope that Terri, Hazel and Lucy do well in their GCSEs that are currently happening and we wish all people in the church currently doing exams the best of luck!

Currently, that is all the major things we have been doing in the past few months. I hope you are now up-to-date with all our activities and I will be writing again soon!!

February 2009

It’s been a while since I last wrote. A lot has been happening since November. Firstly we had our GB Christmas party organised by the Brigaders and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. Then we had our break and came back full of energy.

Recently, the Brigaders have been going into the Explorers to help out. I have been informed of what they have been doing this time so I can inform you. They have been cooking many things and playing many games. Recently I went in with Lucy and we helped them to decorate biscuits after skipping. Terri has also been in and wrote this about them: “During Girls brigade as Brigaders we have been taking it in turns to help out with the explorers as part of our badge. This involves telling stories, playing games to improve their physical skills and creative artwork. So far I have found this interesting and I am finding out lots of new things about my company. The younger girls are eager to get stuck in and are enthusiastic to learn more this makes it a pleasure to work with them.”

This time the Juniors have been secretive and haven’t told me what they are doing, but that will soon be sorted out and I will update you.

The Seniors and Brigaders (when not in Explorers) have been learning about baby care ready for practical’s around March. There have been some funny times, some weird moments and some complete silence. I think we are all a bit scared about the topic as we do not know that much and don’t want to look a fool.

That’s the update for now but I will be back soon (sooner than the last time) to review our progress and to update you with all we are doing!

Girls Brigade - November 2008

Many things have been happening at Girls Brigade. We have all been doing our own things and have progressed in our badges. However, the explorers have been very secretive this month and have not told me what they have been doing!

The juniors have been doing some work towards their badge (although I’m not sure which). They presented their work as a beginning to the Girls Brigade. They went through the Lord’s Prayer one line at a time and described what they thought it meant. This was also accompanied by pictures that they had drawn.

The brigaders and seniors have been doing some Christmas activities such as decorating baubles and making cards. We have also been brushing up on our GB knowledge for a test sometime soon.

On the 24th November, the seniors and brigaders are going to Milton

That’s all for this month but you will be updated soon enough!

Girls Brigade - October 2008

This past month has been packed full of things that we have been doing. Everyone has been busy doing their own thing and have packed quite a few things into their month. Unfortunately the Explorers have been so secretive; I haven’t been told what they have been doing this month.

The Juniors have been doing their fair share of cooking in Salem Hall recently. One week, they even made pizza! They shared it with their families, but not with the rest of Girls Brigade. As you may remember recently, we had our harvest festival where all the windows were decorated. This year, our window was decorated by the Junior section.  They did a fantastic job and fitted the theme well. I have also been informed that they have been playing games as well.

The Seniors and Brigaders have been continuing with the Bible Drama and performed it to the rest of the company and they all understood the two stories displayed to them. We also had a night on healthy eating where we got to eat 5 different fruits. But there was a flaw in the plan as one us (not mentioning any names *cough cough*) didn’t like fruit, so sat eating cakes that got brought in, but then contributed by eating the yogurts also provided.

The Juniors, Seniors and Brigaders all joined up and then split into three groups with one Brigader and one Senior

More things are being planned for us and these will be revealed in later sessions!

September 2008

A new school term means a new Girls Brigade term and that means more work to do! We have got right back into our badge work. Each section has our own work to do and each is completely different!

Although we only have been back for two days, the Explorers have been busy preparing for their first badge of the year and have been deciding what to do first.

The Juniors have been busy painting pictures of people for the past two sessions. The reasons have yet been described to me, but I will keep you informed when I find out!

The Seniors and Brigaders have started work for our badges and are on the way to getting our first one. We have started with Bible Drama and have chosen a character out of the Bible to act out and show in one devotions to the Juniors and Explorers. We have extra plans for the rest of the year, but these have yet to be explained to us!

We would also like to thank those who attended Parade last week. We had a small turnout, but those who came enjoyed themselves. We also like to welcome any new faces that we have received and would hope that you will enjoy yourselves and find many new friends at Girls Brigade.

July 2008

Not much has been happening at Girls Brigade recently because we have all been really busy preparing for our display evening that is coming up really soon! Each group has got their own presentation that they are doing, although we have been joining up to do team games and another routine at the end of the evening, but that is going to stay a secret for now!!

GB, BB, URActors and possibly FURY are going to be joining forces for the 5th July. As you may or may not be aware, this is the date of the Wellingborough Carnival and we will all be walking or will be on the lorry that we are using. We are all looking forward to it. But we will need the support of parents, carers or other people because it is hard to be standing for a long period of time and it would lift our spirits for people to come and support. So if you are free, please come down and give us a cheer to keep us going!!

A few weeks ago, we had area parade. Lots of people from our company and surrounding companies joined us. It was an enjoyable morning and we all talked across companies to compare activities.

That is it for now, so really not much has been happening. You won’t hear from us again for a while as we are taking a break after our display evening because it will be summer holidays. So we should have a lot to talk about next academic year.

May 2008

It has been a while since we last wrote about what we have been doing. We have done so much that it would be impossible to put down on one page.

The explorers have been very busy thinking about what they are going to do for our presentation evening in June. They have been practicing for it, along with playing games to help with team work.

The juniors were looking at healthy eating and made fruit salads that they all enjoyed. They also have been practicing for the presentation evening along with some helpful games.

The seniors and brigadiers have recently had letters from some girls from some Girls Brigade in Africa. We replied to the letters and hope to keep a line of communication open.

We have completed the display which is looking very bright and cheery. We have also started practicing for the presentation evening and are all looking forward to it.

As you may have been aware, it was the Waendal Walk weekend the 10th-11th May. We, as a company, didn’t do the walk over the weekend; we did it on the Friday as the friendship walk. We walked 6 miles in three hours and got a portion of well earned chips. The Boys Brigade also joined in, but walked much further ahead, although the brigaders of GB weren’t far behind them for most of it. Lucy, Terri and Hazel were the first three out of both the Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade to finish it and get back to Salem lane.

That’s about all the main things that have been happening over the last few months. We are all really enjoying ourselves and can’t wait to show what we have been learning to our parents.

January 2008

This month at Girls Brigade, we have done many things. We started the New Year with group games and enjoyed many different activities. We then went into our smaller groups (Explorers, Juniors, Seniors and Brigaders) to start on our badge work.

The Explorers have done many activities, including learning about the common birds in the garden as part of their badge work. The also have made rock cakes and played hockey.

The Juniors have been very busy with painting activities and created the poster outside church “Love Life, Live Lent”. They also celebrated English Breakfast week in January and cooked a breakfast, this included porridge, bacon, sausages, eggs, and eggy bread.

The Seniors and Brigaders started to work on our display board in the youth room. The topic this time is Green Planet. We gave ourselves different tasks to do and are on our way to accomplishing them. The next week, we went to Raunds Fire Station to learn more about fire safety. Everyone really enjoyed the outing and were planning to go the next week but unfortunately it was cancelled.

As it was Pancake Day on the 5th February, we decided to get all the different companies together and did lots of pancake activities, including races and eating them!! We enjoyed the evening very much.
